BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM DECEMBER 2025 5 SPORTS HISTORY BUFF I have been a fan of Notre Dame ever since I watched the 1971 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas in what was Joe Theismann's last game in an Irish uniform. I am also an aficio- nado of everything Notre Dame. From the baseball team to hockey and hoops to collecting memorabilia. I have also read every- thing about the football teams I could get my hands on. One such item I have in my collection is a game pro- gram from the 1946 Army- Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium. I am hoping that Blue & Gold Illus- trated could dedicate a special issue to commemorate that "Game of the Cen- tury," since 2026 will mark its 80th anni- versary. Maybe even make it a two-game issue, what with 2026 being the 60th anniversary of the Michigan State-Notre Dame 10-10 tie in East Lansing. Attached are some photos of the game program I spoke of earlier, which I purchased from eBay a few years ago. I am in my 31st year as a history teacher, and this year the junior high I teach at started an Intro to Sports His- tory class. I was lucky enough to be teaching five classes of this subject and only the sec- ond teacher in my district to teach the course. The other teacher is at the high school. I brought in the pro- gram to show my students a piece of college football history. They enjoyed how old it was. I h ave b e e n a s u b - scriber for a while now and would love to see this wish concerning these two great games come to fruition. Thank you for reading my email, and I truly hope you consider my idea. Tony Griffo History Teacher, Notre Dame Fanatic We will take your idea into consider- ation, Mr. Griffo. It would be great to relive those two amazing games with at least a story in the magazine next fall. DELIVERY ISSUES The USPS has collapsed. I received today, First Class, the Navy game issue. Box 2331, Durham, NC 27702 Notre Dame junior running back Jeremiyah Love continues to make his case as a legit Heisman Trophy candidate, most recently with his 8-carry, 171-yard and 3-touchdown performance against Syracuse Nov. 22. Heading into the final weekend of the college foot- ball season, here's what some Irish fans had to say about Love's Heisman chances — his +375 odds as of Nov. 24 were second best in the country, sandwiched between a pair of Big Ten quarterbacks, Indiana's Fer- nando Mendoza (-105) and Ohio State's Julian Sayin (+400) — on our message board at BlueandGold.com. irishfan1983: He'll be a first-team AA and win the Doak Walker. I wish he could win the Heisman, but we all know it is going to a B1G QB. What a season for Love. Domerdad: Guy is amazing. If he isn't in NY for the Heisman and doesn't win Doak Walker, it's a total joke. o_ND50188: Best player in college football!!! Does dynamic things in every game, highlight machine. Never hurts the team for personal gain, always pro- tects the ball. All that he does is a masterpiece on the field, and I can't remember not one fumble all year!!!! J Love = Heisman Trophy. SD123: IMPACT. That is JLove. hbmikeoc: If [Boise State running back Ashton] Jeanty didn't win last year with the second greatest season for a RB in history to a media-hyped Coach Prime [Colo- rado's Deion Sanders] two-way player wide receiver/ cornerback Travis Hunter] … Love is the best player in the country. Love is a better RB than any QB is at QB. Bunco: Been watching ND football since 1970, and I jealously uphold the honor of the past players due to recency bias. But in the case of Jeremiah Love, in my opinion he's the best RB I've seen at ND. If you'd line him up in the I formation and give it to him 25 times like the old days the stats would be staggering. dtempel65: There's been a seismic shift in the Heis- man landscape in just a few days. Travis Hunter won last year because many believed he was the best player even though Jeanty had a statistical season for the ages. Men- doza and Sayin aren't putting up the numbers that Jeanty did last year, so Love can overtake them. HC92: Feels like there's a lot of late momentum for JLove. Seemed like he was everywhere in the media last week prior to the Syracuse game and then scored 3 TDs on 8 carries. Another 150+ yards and 3 TDs against Stanford and I'll say he has a fighting chance. He should be in NY at a minimum. FROM THE WEB .com .com JOIN THE CONVERSATION AT BLUEANDGOLD.COM!
