8 A P R I L 2 0 2 6 OPENING SHOT FROZEN IN TIME The Penn State women's ice hockey team hoisted the NCAA regional championship trophy after its 3-0 shutout of Connecticut on March 14 at Pegula Ice Arena. A trio of forwards — freshman Matilde Fantin, senior Tessa Janecke and sophomore Abby Stonehouse — provided the scoring, while senior goaltender Katie DeSa stopped 36 shots to give the third-ranked Nittany Lions their first-ever Frozen Four berth. The victory capped a steady rise that had been underway since coach Jeff Kampersal arrived in 2017. Kampersal, formerly of Princeton, had inherited a team that went 9-21-5 the year before he took over. While progress was slow at first, there were signs of improvement both on and off the ice.
