In the Sept. 21 game against Michigan State, Notre
Dame was aiming for its 10th consecutive victory on its
home field.
Believe it or not, that would make it only the fifth time
the Fighting Irish won at least 10 straight games at Notre
Dame Stadium since its opening in 1930. Entering the
MSU contest, there was a five-way tie for fifth place with
nine consecutive victories.
Furthermore, the Irish have won more than 10 in a
row at Notre Dame Stadium only twice in that time despite the presence of four College Football Hall of Fame
coaches in Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and
Lou Holtz.
Leahy lost or tied a home game each of his last four
seasons at Notre Dame (1950-53), while Holtz lost at
least one game at home in each of his last seven years
(1990-96).
