Chase Hounshell On The Mend Junior defensive end Chase Hounshell, sidelined all of 2012 after labrum surgery, and then again this spring when he incurred the same injury, might be able to start working out in pads by this November. According to Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, that doesn't mean Hounshell will play this season. If he misses two consecutive seasons, there is a chance he might be able to apply for a sixth year of eligibility down the road. "I just can't get into those [issues] at this point," Kelly said. Hounshell appeared in seven games as a freshman in 2011, and all four of his tackles that season came in the 59-33 victory at home against Air Force. The Fighting Irish junior class reeled in the No. 1-ranked defensive line in February 2011, including 2012 AllAmerican Stephon Tuitt, but it has been ravaged by attrition. In addition to Hounshell's injuries, Aaron Lynch, a 2011 Freshman All-American, transferred to South Florida; Tony Springmann is sidelined this year because of a knee injury suffered in August; and Brad Carrico, an early enrollee, moved to offense and is no longer able to play for medical reasons. Springmann's rehabilitation recently had a temporary setback because of an infection. How much he will be able to participate next spring is still to be determined.
