Under the Dome Top of The Class Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Steven Summerhays — Hockey The Irish goalie won Hockey East's Co-Defender of the Week award during the team's first week of competition in the new conference. Summerhays, a senior, stopped all 44 shots he faced in a pair of shutout wins over No. 18 Western Michigan to start the season. The Alaska native has eight career shutouts during his Notre Dame career. He'll need five more blankings this season to set a program record. Kevin Hassett — Fencing Notre Dame's top sabre performer won his first meet of the season Oct. 13, a head-to-head battle with Ohio State. Hassett, a product of the Oregon Fencing Alliance, won All-America honors in the sabre event as a sophomore. His sister, Eileen, is a four-time All-American who fenced for the Irish during her career as well. Hassett's first-place finish was one of three that carried Notre Dame past the Buckeyes to start the season. Jeremy Rae — Cross Country The fifth-year senior won Notre Dame's first ACC Performer of the Week in cross country Oct. 8 with a strong showing in the Notre Dame Invitational. Rae finished fifth overall in a field of 209 runners. His fast time (24:33.9) helped the No. 22 Irish to a seventh-place finish in a field stocked with ranked opponents. Rae, an All-American on the track, returned this fall for a final semester of collegiate competition. Monica Robinson — Tennis The freshman made a strong debut at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Oct. 11-15, reaching the doubles quarterfinals with senior partner Jennifer Kellner. Robison and Kellner eventually lost to the region's top duo, Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender from Michigan. Robinson was ranked eighth among tennis prospects entering college this year. She won twice in the regional singles tournament as well before falling to No. 3 seed Ronit Yurovsky, also from Michigan.
