we love putting him in ball-screening situations. "I told him this morning in practice, 'You know what's amazing … how you've learned to move without the ball. You were a stander and a watcher.' He kind of laughed and said, 'I've come a long way.'" According to Brey, the backcourt is not only a strength because of the senior duo of Grant and point guard Eric Atkins, but also due to the energy of freshman Demetrius Jackson. "Our freshman class as a whole, and him specifically, handled this summer like young men — academically, meetings, win streak, fitting in with an older group," Brey said. "I think right now he defers a little too much to the older guys, but that's okay. There's an energy he gives, the ability to pressure the ball defensively when he gets in the game, the ability to get to the lane. Outside of the backcourt trio, forwards Tom Knight, Garrick Sherman and Zach Auguste and guard/forward Pat Connaughton are all guaranteed to be in Brey's rotation. Sophomore forward Cam Biedscheid contributed 17.4 minutes per game a year ago, but the 2013-14 Irish are deeper and minutes might be tougher to earn. "Cam's had a really good summer, and he needed to have a really big summer," Brey said. "He's had a good summer and a good fall, and he's made good progress, gotten stronger. With Cam it's always been, 'Are you easy to play with, are you easier to play with?' and knowing what a good shot is and having more of a defensive presence — all improvement in those areas.
