possible, but we've got so much talent on beam it's pretty amazing. "Vaulting is really good, floor is really good. If we are weak somewhere, it's bars. We are going to need a couple of our freshmen to step up and become good bar workers within the next three months. We feel like they are going to make that jump." Stevenson has one goal for this year's team: make the NCAA Championships. With a little help from the younger gymnasts on the bars and good luck with health, Stevenson likes his odds. "We've never had a better chance," he said. ■ ■ By The Numbers 3 A Private Gated Community of 16 Exclusive Homesites • Homesites from 1.8 Acres • Wooded and Lake Views marketed by The Young Team John Young 919.271.8820 johnyoung@hpw.com • Custom Builder Team • 1/2 mile from Hasentree Reservations Now Available 919.271.8820 developed by The Cove at Falls Lake Henry MacNair, Owner/Broker 919.781.4177 Number of gymnasts whose career high scores are 9.950. Last year at the J.O. Nationals, Bisbe finished eighth in the all-around and eighth on the bars. Her latter finish is especially appealing because bars is the apparatus that Stevenson identified as a potential weak point for his squad. Unbeknownst to many then, though, Maryland was not far off from finalizing plans to leave the ACC for the Big Ten. Thus plans for an upstart ACC gymnastics league are on the shelf for now, and NCSU, UNC and Pittsburgh will be sticking with the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. The conference will be getting tougher, however. Stevenson noted that league rival George Washington is going to 10 full scholarships in gymnastics, and their recruiting has picked up as a result. • Last year's gymnastics squad not only excelled on the field of competition, winning the program's fifth-ever EAGL title and reaching the NCAA Regional for the 11th straight year, they shined in the classroom, too. Eleven different gymnasts were recognized by the ACC on the 57th annual ACC Academic Honor Roll, which consists of athletes who participated in a varsity sport and achieved a grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Eight of the 11 are back in 2014. 106  ■  the wolfpacker 104-107.Gymnastics Preview.indd 106 10/22/13 1:58 PM
