Ba ketball Preview 2013-14 ■ Tyler Lewis 12 • PG So. • Statesville, N.C. • 5-11 • 170 Analysis: Lewis will likely have a significantly larger role this season. He will compete with freshman guard Anthony 'Cat' Barber for the starting point guard job left vacant by Lorenzo Brown. Regardless of who starts, both Lewis and Barber will probably play lots of minutes. Lewis is a crafty point guard with good court vision. He is good at getting his teammates involved and takes care of the basketball (assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.2:1 as a freshman). He has added 15 pounds to get stronger, which should help him defensively. Lewis will also need to improve on his three-point shooting so defenses have to respect his jumper. Career Highlights: Played in all but one game as a freshman … Scored a career-high 16 points and added five assists against eventual ACC-champ Miami, which was led by first-team All-ACC point guard Shane Larkin … Had 13 points and six assists with just one turnover at Duke in his first career start … Dished out six assists in his debut against Miami (Ohio) … Rated by Rivals. com as the No. 6 point guard and No. 48 player in the country in the 2012 class … Lewis averaged 12.0 points and 7.9 assists per game to help Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy finish 44-0 and win the mythical national championship as a senior … Played in both the McDonald's All-American Game in Chicago and the Derby Classic in Louisville, Ky. … Played traveling team basketball with Team Loaded. Coach's Corner: "I think Tyler has done or tried to do everything we've asked. He has gotten stronger. He's being more vocal every day, whether they're out on the track or in here playing pick-up games. He's stepping forward a little bit more as a leader, and I think he's gotten better as a player, too." — Head coach Mark Gottfried Personal: Younger brother of Charlotte senior guard Colby Lewis, and his father, Rick Lewis, is a former AAU boys' basketball coach, who runs basketball camps and the scouting service Phenom Hoops Report.
