Thornton was removed from all team activities and suspended indefinitely. At a minimum, Thornton was going to have to sit out the opener against Louisiana Tech. The message from Doeren was clear: If Thornton wanted his job back, he was going to have to earn it both on and off the field. "No room for error," Thornton recalled. "It made me grow up from a boy to a man, take the role instead of assuming the role. It made me a better person overall, it really has." Doeren began to notice a change in Thornton during preseason camp. "I think he's grown a lot," Doeren said. "He's worked extremely hard. I'm very proud of the way he has handled the situation. It hasn't been easy or fun, but he's come to work every day with a great attitude and been very supportive of his teammates." Thornton described his probationary-like period as "grind time." After missing the opener against Louisiana Tech, Thornton was mainly a spectator against Richmond after muffing a kickoff return that he was only able to run back five yards. The carries went to redshirt junior Tony Creecy and freshman Matt Dayes instead. Then against No. 3 Clemson, the same Tigers he ran wild against a year before, Thornton flashed the form he showed last season. He caught just one pass, but he turned the screen play into a 32-yard gain, the second-longest pass play of the evening. He ran just once, but he turned the carry up the middle into a 21-yard touchdown run. By game four, just like last season, Thornton made his seasonal debut as a feature back. He ran 13 times for 71 yards and a score in a 48-14 win over Central Michigan. During the week leading up to the Central Michigan contest, Thornton was told by the coaches that his role would increase if he continued to get better. After all that he had been through, Thornton had learned to take nothing for granted. "I'm just blessed to have a chance to go out there with my teammates and play football with them," Thornton said. "I play for the guy next to me. It's an opportunity given to me by these great coaches and I just want to see them all." Since the Central Michigan game, Thornton has become the primary ball carrier even as the offense struggled in ACC losses to Wake Forest and Syracuse. He had 31 of the 35 handoffs to running backs in those two games combined. 98 ■ the wolfpacker 96,98-99.Shadrach Thornton.indd 98 10/22/13 1:55 PM
