T3. Indiana (4-4): Watch out for the Hoosiers — they will put a scare into
every team on their schedule, like they did with Michigan. The November
slate sets up nicely for IU, too, because teams such as Minnesota, Illinois
and Purdue will not be able to match Indiana's offense. The two better
teams — Wisconsin and Ohio State (both on the road for Indiana) — can
keep up, and they have good enough defenses to slow the Crimson and
Cream. But Indiana finishes 4-4 in league play and 6-6 overall to earn a
much-ballyhooed bowl berth.
5. Illinois (1-7): Like Iowa and Minnesota, Illinois has won more than
expected after a disastrous 2012 in which the Orange and Blue went 2-10.
However, the last few weeks have been more of what was anticipated,
with Illinois losing 39-19 to Nebraska, 56-32 to Wisconsin and 42-3 to
Michigan State. The Illini just are not capable of beating the good teams on
their schedule, so chalk up losses to Penn State, Ohio State, Northwestern
and even Indiana. But UI beats Purdue.
6. Purdue (0-8): A rough, rough year for Purdue — the Boilermakers
were 1-6 and 0-3 in conference play heading into November — gets worse.
Much worse. In theory, the Gold and Black could beat Illinois and Indiana, but they won't. They'll finish 0-8, becoming the 13th team since Penn
State's arrival in 1993, including Purdue that same year, to go without a
league win.
