Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 5-11 85 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 1928 In one of the indelible moments of college football history, Notre Dame head coach Knute Rockne delivers his "win one for the Gipper" speech at halftime against Army, which enters the game with an 11-game winning streak — including an 18-0 shutout of Notre Dame the previous year — and road victories earlier in the season against Harvard (15-0) and Yale (18-6). The speech is to honor the memory of former Notre Dame consensus All-American halfback George Gipp, who died his senior year on Dec. 14, 1920, from streptococcal throat infection. Rockne relays to his team that on his deathbed, Gipp told him: "I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy." After falling behind 6-0, Notre Dame knots the score on a one-yard Jack Chevigny run, scores on a 38-yard fourth-down pass from John Niemiec to Johnny "One Play" O'Brien and makes a valiant goalline stand as time expires in the 12-6 victory to improve to 5-2. 55 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1958 Versus Pitt, George Izo becomes the first quarterback in Notre Dame history to eclipse 300 yards passing in a game, completing 18 of 26 attempts for 332 yards — the highest total in college football since 1954 — and two touchdowns, to Monty Stickles. Alas, six Irish turnovers (five fumbles) allow the Panthers, led by All-American Mike Ditka, to win 29‑26 when they score the go-ahead touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the contest. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 1973 Fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock literally carries No. 5 Notre Dame to a hardfought 31‑10 victory at Pitt, with the Irish leading only 17‑10 entering the fourth quarter. Notre Dame quarterback Tom Clements, hampered by a groin injury, attempts only four passes. Bullock rushes 27 times for 167 yards — the most in head coach Ara Parseghian's 10 seasons at Notre Fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock ran for 167 yards Dame — and scores all four touchdowns, on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 31-10 three rushing and one receiving. win over Pittsburgh on Nov. 10, 1973. photo courtesy notre dame media relations The Irish overcome Pitt freshman Tony
