25 Years Ago: Nov. 5, 1988
During a 54-11 romp by No. 1 Notre Dame against Rice, freshman Raghib "Rocket" Ismail scores on
83- and 87-yard kickoff returns, tying an NCAA single-game record. The only other Irish player who had
returned two kickoffs for scores in a game was Paul Castner versus Kalamazoo in 1922.
15 Years Ago: Nov. 7, 1998
Trailing 31-26 with 1:07 left, Boston College has a first-and-goal at the Notre Dame 4-yard line. The
Eagles send the nation's second-leading rusher, Mike Cloud, into the middle three straight times before
calling their last timeout with 11 seconds left.
On fourth-and-inches from the goal line, safety Deke Cooper, who is instructed to pursue the run and
disregard the pass or anything to the outside, shoots through the middle unblocked and nails Cloud for
a two-yard loss, keeping 7-1 Notre Dame's BCS hopes alive.
