Senior Mike Wynalda, who earned All-America honors in the 200-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay, and won a Big Ten title in the 800-yard freestyle relay last year, will play a big part. And Bottom has been impressed with sophomore Dylan Bosch, a butterfly swimmer, and senior Kyle Whitaker, an eight-time AllAmerican. "Bosch has been a great leader," Bottom said. "He has stepped up in a big way. Kyle Whitaker and Mike Wynalda are showing things that we had not seen last year. There's a real commitment to excellence from them that could take them to the next level. Those are some guys who we're looking toward to have big years." Bottom also said senior Richard Funk's breaststroke times are among the best in the country right now. Last year, the Wolverines talked about national championships. But there was no tangible way to know what that meant — or how to get there. Now, Michigan knows exactly what it needs to do. "Everyone knows we're working together for one common goal," Funk said. "What you do is going to have
