michigan recruiting Commits, Prospects Earn Honors It's no surprise that the prospects Michigan recruits saw plenty of success on the gridiron this fall. Contributing to their high school teams in major ways earned a number of them special recognition from local and statewide media outlets. Given the reputation of Brady Hoke and his staff as a defensive-minded bunch, they're certain to be happy with adding two Defensive Players of the Year from their respective areas. Southfield (Mich.) defensive end Lawrence Marshall was named the MLive Metro Detroit Defensive Player of the Year among his many all-state and all-area honors (including defensive captain of The Detroit News alldivision Dream Team). Kenton (Ohio) linebacker Noah Furbush was the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year for Division 4, Ohio's fourthlargest division, and a member of the Division 4 All-State first team. Other soon-to-be Wolverine defenders weren't so far behind their future teammates. Warren (Mich.) De La Salle linebacker Jared Wangler and uncommitted (though high on Michigan) defensive lineman Malik McDowell were on the all-metro Detroit Dream Team, as selected by The Detroit News. The group also includes Marshall and could form the nucleus for a talented U-M defense. Ohio also saw plenty of Wolverines honored on the defensive side of the ball. Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne junior safety Tyree Kinnel and Lake- Berea (Ky.) Madison Southern running back Damien Harris was elevated to five-star status and rated as the No. 5 player nationally by Rivals.com after racking up 2,621 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior. photo by lon horwedel wood (Ohio) St. Edward defensive back Shaun Crawford earned Special Mention on the AP All-Ohio team for Division 1, the state's largest division — and Crawford may have been higher if not for splitting his attention between defense and the offensive side of the ball, where he was a running back and slot receiver. St. Clairsville (Ohio) linebacker Michael Ferns had a trying season from an injury perspective, missing several games due to a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. Despite that, the AP named him a Special Mention AllOhio selection in Division 5.
