hoo's hot Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Courtney Bartholomew ◆ Swimming Last year's ACC Freshman of the Year closed the 2013 calendar year with a bang, setting a pair of ACC records at the Ohio State Invite Nov. 22-24. Bartholomew set ACC, school, McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and Ohio State Invite records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. Her time of 1:50.55 in the 200 back was the second fastest recorded to date, while her clocking of 50.73 in the 100 was the third fastest. The second-year from Holland, Mich., who was tabbed as the ACC Female Swimmer of the Week Nov. 25, also led off the 200 medley relay that hit an NCAA Championship qualifying time and placed fifth in the event. Eric Bird ◆ Soccer The third-year midfielder was named a third-team All-America selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Soccer America. He is the first Cavalier to earn an NSCAA All-America nod since Tony Tchani in 2009. Bird was also named second-team All-ACC after he paced his squad with seven goals and 19 points, while his five assists tied him for the team lead. He helped the Cavaliers reach the College Cup and was also named to the ACC All-Tournament team. Elly Buckley ◆ Field Hockey The fourth-year midfielder became the fourth player in program history and 13th ACC product to be named a four-time All-American. Buckley was named to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America first team for the i10-13.V-Sports.indd 3 second straight season (she was a second-teamer during her first two years on campus). She is also just one of 11 players in ACC annals to earn four all-conference laurels, and in 2013 she led the league in points (49), goals (20) and defensive saves (six). The native of Australia finished her career third in school history in points (182), fourth in goals (73), fourth in defensive saves (11) and seventh in assists (36). Jasmine Burton ◆ Volleyball The West Hills, Calif., native was selected to the All-ACC third team and was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year. Burton is the first Virginia player to earn the honor since MacKenzie Adams in 2010, and she combined with classmate Haley Kole to give the program two members on the ACC All-Freshman squad for the first time since 1997. The right side hitter finished third on the team with 380 kills, 2.97 kills per set, 73 blocks and a .259 hitting percentage. Payton Hazzard ◆ Track and Field The third-year started his season by winning the men's 200-meter dash at Clemson's Orange & Purple Classic Jan. 11. Hazzard clocked a 21.78, which is tied for the second-best time in school history. However, since the race was run on a flat track, the native of Huntington, N.Y., gets credit for running a 21.39 for ACC and NCAA seeding purposes (which would have set a new indoor school record). Hazzard was one of nine Cavaliers who earned a gold medal in the season opener. 1/16/14 2:23 PM
