UNDER THE DOME 50 Years Ago: May 7, 1964 Notre Dame's new Memorial Library — featuring the Word of Life Mural with Christ The Teacher — is officially dedicated. It was to be kept covered until the day of the formal dedication, but strong winds unveiled it a day early. Two days later, new head coach Ara Parseghian's first spring at Notre Dame ends with his varsity squad posting a 30-23 victory versus the "Old- Timers" — which included 12 pro players, six of which were still active. Replacing the injured John Huarte, who sepa- rated his throwing shoulder a week earlier, quar- terback Sandy Bonvechio completes 9 of 12 passes for 170 yards, with 19- and 56-yard scoring passes to Jack Snow. Keeping the Old-Timers in the game is the pass- ing of George Izo, whose 13 completions net 225 yards, with touchdown passes to Jim Kelly and Red Mack. The pass defense concerns Parseghian so much he later would move running back Nick Ras- sas and quarterback Tom Longo to the secondary. 35 Years Ago: May 3, 1979 With the 82nd pick in the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select … quarterback Joe Montana from Notre Dame. The 49ers had just hired new head coach Bill Walsh from nearby Stanford (1977-78) after post- ing a league-worst 2-14 record in 1978, and had also lost their first-round choice in a deal for run- ning back O.J. Simpson, who retired. In need of a quarterback, Walsh's most coveted target was Phil Simms of Morehead State, but he knew he would be off the board in the first round.
