who had caught only 11 passes in 12 games his senior year, and 33 in his college career. The interest in Montana began when the 49ers scouting office watched him throwing to UCLA wide receiver James Owens in a workout in South- ern California, which led Walsh and assistant Sam Wyche to investigate more. Owens was picked by San Francisco in the second round. Three quarterbacks were taken in the first round: Washington State's Jack Thompson (third pick, Cincinnati), Simms (seventh pick, New York Giants) and Fuller (23rd pick, Kansas City). Mon- tana was the fourth QB chosen, with the final pick of the third round. In the 10th round (there were 12 rounds back then), Walsh also decides to take a flier with the Clemson wideout Clark. 10 Years Ago: May 2, 2004 Rev. Ned Joyce, C.S.C., passes away at age 87 from the complications of a stroke suffered in September 2002. The executive vice president of Notre Dame from 1952-87 also was the primary decision maker in the athletics department while being inexorably linked with Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., during their 35 years of leadership at the school. "The backgrounds and personalities of Hesburgh and Joyce enabled the university to escalate into a national and international standard of excellence academically, athletically and spiritually," Blue & Gold Illustrated wrote after Joyce's death. "Hes- burgh was liberal, Joyce conservative. Hesburgh was eloquent with words, Joyce was a whiz with numbers. Hesburgh knew where to spend money, Joyce was a specialist in raising it. Hesburgh was tepid about athletics, Joyce was more passionate. "'We were the best of friends and I learned a lot from him,' said Hesburgh (who turns 97 this May 25). 'Without him, both the university and I would have been much diminished.'" — Lou Somogyi UNDER THE DOME Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
