ND SPORTS attackman Matt Kavanagh filled the hero role in a 6-5 win over No. 1-seeded Maryland. Kavanagh scored with less than 10 seconds remaining in a defen- sive battle to knock off the Terps. A week later, the Irish offense flexed its potential in an 18-17 exhibition win over Army while tuning up for the NCAA Tournament. Good pressure in transition defense created a turnover for the Irish with less than a minute to play in that game, and junior Conor Doyle buried the tiebreaker this time around. "I think that's one of our strengths," said senior John Scioscia, who scored a career-high six goals in the Army vic- tory. "However it unfolds we're able to play that game. We don't want to let the other team dictate the entire game, but things can happen and you don't really know before the day how it's going to play out." Scioscia followed up his six-goal game with four more in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, a less heart attack-inducing 13-5 win over Harvard May 10 in South Bend. The undersized shooter is the team's third- highest scorer this season, with 10 of his 25 goals coming the last two games. Clemson won the following day, but the Irish clinched a rare conference series win by beating the Tigers 11-3 May 11. SOFTBALL (39-11, 16-5 ACC) The No. 20 Irish came up a few runs short of an ACC championship during their first season in the league. The Irish fell 3-1 to Florida State in the title game May 10, the day after finishing final exams. Freshman Karley Wester led a 9-6, comeback win over Virginia Tech to get her team to the final. Notre Dame trailed the Hokies 5-0 before scoring nine of the game's last 10 runs. WOMEN'S LACROSSE (10-9, 2-5 ACC) Sophomore Rachel Sexton's three goals weren't enough to push Notre Dame into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Duke upset the Irish 10-8 May 11 in South Bend to end their 2014 season. Sexton provided seven goals in the tournament. The first four came in an 18-4 opening round win over High Point May 9. TENNIS The men's and women's teams both advanced to the Sweet 16 round in the NCAA Tournament during the second weekend of May. Sophomore Quentin Monaghan punched the men's team's ticket with his
