ended his season. The Martins are the second set of brothers to be named captains for the Notre Dame football team, joining line- backer/middle guard Bob Golic (1978) and outside linebacker Mike Golic (1984). "Be you, don't change," said the younger Martin of the message he re- ceived from Zack upon learning of the honor. "He was very proud." Day contributed significantly as a re- serve freshman defensive lineman on the 12-1 team two years ago, recording 23 tackles, before stepping into the start- ing lineup in 2013. He played in 11 games, starting eight while battling a sprained ankle a month into the season, and finished with 33 tackles and 5.5 stops for loss in 2013. Day had been nicknamed "The Mayor" by former Notre Dame defen- sive coordinator Bob Diaco (2010-13) because of a personality teammates gravitated toward, and he also labeled him an "old soul" because of wisdom that belied his youth. Under Kelly, Notre Dame had three captains in 2013, four in 2012, one in 2011 and used weekly captains in his first season back in 2010. Kelly said the goal is to have a crew of captains that fairly represent the entire team in a "limited democracy."
