and keep people off him, he's going to make big plays." On the offense's slow start: "You never want to three-and-out on the first couple series, but once we got the ball rolling, it was rolling." Notre Dame sophomore receiver Will Fuller … On being underthrown a touch on his 75-yard touchdown recep- tion: "We had another opportunity where [Golson] overthrew me a little bit. I know it doesn't have anything to do with his arm. I know he can put it out there." Notre Dame senior linebacker Joe Schmidt … On running the defense in a game for the first time: "Thank God I practice against, I think, one of the best offenses in the country. We get every single concept, every single play. The game prep for Rice … we had an awesome look this week. "In terms of communication, there are a few things I wish we could have cleaned up, some plays you want back. But on the whole our communication was pretty crisp, pretty clean, and that's what I really wanted for today. I think it's a good building block for the future." Notre Dame junior slot receiver C.J. Prosise … On his 53-yard touchdown recep- tion: "I looked back and saw [Gol- son] starting to roll out, so I just took off for the end zone. I saw him line up and throw, so I started running to get to the ball. "I knew it was there, so I just had to catch it. I was thinking more about the touchdown than the catch." On Golson's ability to almost ca- sually throw the football 60 yards: "It happens. He has a cannon as you can see. He lines up and it flies. It's nice to have that." On Golson's leadership style: "He's not yelling, but he's talking to you and tells you how he wants you to do it and what he's seeing. It's always good to know what he's see- ing so you can be on the same page." Notre Dame junior defensive lineman Sheldon Day … On playing Michigan in a week: "Michigan's a great opponent, espe- cially with the many weapons that they have. It's definitely going to be a great game." Rice head coach David Bailiff … On opening the season against Notre Dame: "I'm glad we opened with a team like Notre Dame. If we want to be the best, we've got to open with the best, and I think that's what the University of Notre Dame is." On Golson's ability to extend plays and improvise: "Golson is just an amazing, amazing quarterback — the choices he makes, the ways he can extend the play … that's what great quarterbacks do, and that's what he did."
