"Devin Gardner has not been a
leader, period," Balas said. "He's got‑
ten a lot better this year and they've
lauded him, but he is not the guy guys
flock around and follow the way they
did Denard Robinson. He has kind of
been a 'me guy,' so I think that's part
of it too.
"He's gotten a lot better in that re‑
spect, but there's not a whole lot of
guys in the senior class to choose
from."
Michigan has only nine seniors on
the squad, and two of those are kick‑
ers. A lack of veteran talent led Hoke
to announce in late August that the
Wolverines would use weekly cap‑
tains throughout the fall and then vote
on 2014 captains once the regular sea‑
son had concluded.
"I don't think they have a lot of lead‑
ers," Balas said. "This year he wanted
to make sure that, because there was
a schism between the upperclassmen
and underclassmen last year, that
didn't happen again. He appointed a
