UNDER THE DOME $2,000 Donated to the Notre Dame general scholarship fund through sophomore line- backer Jaylon Smith, who for the second time in the first five games was named the National Impact Player of the Week by the Lott Award. The first was following his week two per- formance against Michigan in which he had 10 tackles in the 31-0 shutout. Then against Stanford on Oct. 4, Smith had a career-high 14 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a sack, in the 17-14 Irish win. A $1,000 donation is made each time. Also after the Stanford game, sophomore cornerback Cole Luke was named the Athlon National Defensive Player of the Week. 7 Notre Dame wide receivers or tight ends since 1972 that caught a touchdown on their first career catch with the Irish — most re- cently sophomore TORII HUNTER JR. versus Syracuse Sept. 27. He joined some select company. The other six are 1974 consensus All-Ameri- can wide receiver Pete Demmerle (1972); 1984 first-team Associated Press All-American and future NFL All-Pro tight end Mark Bavaro; 1990 Heisman runner-up wide receiver Raghib "Rocket" Ismail (1988); tight end Derek Brown (1988), who was a first-round draft pick; wide receiver Derrick Mayes (1992), who was a second-round NFL pick; and wide receiver Michael Floyd (2008), who was a first-round draft choice.
