a typical day for us." • The main injury is‑ sue after Stanford was to sophomore running back Tarean Folston, who suf‑ fered a quad contusion during the game but was cleared to prac‑ tice in preparation for the Oct. 11 North Caro‑ lina game. Kelly lauded Folston's work against Stanford at picking up the blitz. • Sophomore Cole Luke received the game ball against Stanford not just because of his two interceptions but his all‑ around play at corner‑ back. Two years ago, fresh‑ man KeiVarae Russell had to step in at corner suddenly because of a season‑ending injury to Lo Wood. This year, with Russell sidelined by an academic probe, Luke has flourished in his place. "What he's improved dramatically on is his technique," Kelly said. "Now, along the way, he's gained a lot of confidence." Classmate Devin Butler also has been seeing more action as the third corner. • Fifth‑year senior safety Austin Collinsworth was gradually integrated back into the lineup briefly against Stanford after recovering from a preseason MCL injury. He will be the swingman at both free safety, where sophomore Max Redfield starts, and strong safety, where junior Elijah Shumate has picked up the pace. Kelly noted how much Shumate progressed during Collinsworth's ab‑ sence. "He's great around the line of scrimmage, he's got to get better in space off the hash," Kelly said of Shumate. "But we can't even have those conversations with him unless he has those weeks of experience."
