showing that they're still our team- mates. "We show respect to them because they did put in a lot of work and a lot of effort just like we did." Redfield said he and other active players have sported the numbers in previous games, and the exiled have seen it, including Russell. On Friday, Russell spoke to the team at practice before announcing via In- stagram he will not play this season, but plans to return in 2015. Sophomore cornerback Cole Luke, who moved into the starting lineup in Russell's ab- sence, spoke with his elder afterward. "I didn't have much time because we were in the middle of practice, but I did get to say a few words to him," Luke said. "He was positive, obvi- ously. That's the kind of guy he is. He came up to me and said, 'Keep ballin' man. I love you.'" Notre Dame sophomore wide re- ceiver Will Fuller recognized Daniels in a manner the senior wideout had re- quested. Last season, whenever Dan- iels scored — something he did seven times — he would raise his hand in a salute with three fingers extended, a move first popularized by "The Hun- ger Games" trilogy. After Fuller's sec- ond score of the night, he delivered that same salute. "We talked earlier this week, and he wanted me to do it," Fuller said. "I respect him. "He's definitely still my brother. I re- ally miss him. He was our leader, and I wish we could have him back." INJURED, AGAIN In only his second game back from an MCL strain suffered two days be- fore the season opener, fifth-year se- nior safety and team captain Austin Collinsworth suffered a dislocated shoulder, according to head coach Brian Kelly. "We'll get an MRI and see where we are once we get further medical diag- nosis on him," Kelly said. In a little more than two games — the dislocation occurred halfway through the first quarter — Collin- sworth totaled only two tackles, in- cluding one on North Carolina's first play from scrimmage. Earlier in the week, Kelly said a silver lining of Collinsworth's initial injury was the depth it created for Notre Dame at safety, with junior Eli- jah Shumate thrust into starting duty. Shumate has totaled 35 tackles this season. "Chemistry grows anytime you play together for an extended amount of time," said sophomore safety Max Redfield, who accompanies either Collinsworth or Shumate in the defen- sive backline. "With Austin or without Austin, our confidence stays the same. We still need to communicate and ex- ecute the same." Fifth-year senior cornerback Cody Riggs suffered an apparent sprained ankle in the third quarter. Trainers helped him to the bench as he walked gingerly. On the very next play, the Tar Heels targeted his replacement, sopho- more Devin Butler, on a trick play that resulted in a touchdown. With a heavily taped ankle, Riggs did return and appeared at full speed. After the game, Kelly said Riggs was "fine." ✦
