yards with touchdown passes of 19 and 11 yards to Ernie Zalejski and Leon Hart, respectively. Williams also scores in the third quarter on a 40-yard run to provide the Irish with a 20-7 cushion. At the end of the season, Michigan State is added to the Big Ten conference (starting in 1953) to replace the University of Chicago, which withdrew in 1946 to make it the "Big Nine." The Spartans credit Notre Dame for helping make it possible when it adds them as a regular rival in 1948 in an effort to upgrade the schedule so it can be admitted into the Big Ten. 10 Years Ago: Nov. 6, 2004 Notre Dame's roller-coaster, 6-3 campaign continues with a 17-13 victory at No. 9 Tennessee. The Irish had opened the season with a 20-17 upset loss at BYU, only to follow up a week later with a 28-20 victory against then No. 8 Michigan. This time it responds to a 24-23 loss a week earlier at home to Boston Col- lege with the upset of the Volunteers. Tennessee has to turn to No. 3 quarterback Rick Clausen — younger brother of former Volunteer Casey, who beat the Irish in 2001, and older brother of future Notre Dame quar- terback Jimmy — after Irish linebacker Brandon Hoyte separates the shoul- der of Erik Ainge on a sack to end the first half. Notre Dame gains only 57 yards total offense in the second half but uses a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Mike Goolsby, forced by nose guard Derek Landri, and a fourth-and-one stop by Hoyte to emerge with the win. Mean- while, two sacks by defensive end Jus- tin Tuck put him atop the Notre Dame chart with 24.5 (sacks were first kept in 1982). Goolsby, who also had 14 tackles (eight solo), two for loss and a sack, is named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week. — Lou Somogyi UNDER THE DOME Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
