UNDER THE DOME Jerome Bettis Earns Award This is one Bus that does not slow down. On Oct. 30, former Notre Dame star fullback Jerome "The Bus" Bettis (1990-92) was the recipient of the Walter Camp Foundation's 2014 Man of the Year award. The honor is presented to an individual who has been closely associated with the game of football as a player, coach or close attendant to the game. The requirements include becoming a leader in his chosen profes- sion, benefitting his community, country and fellow man, an im- peccable reputation of integrity, and dedicated to the philosophy of Walter Camp, considered the father of American football. Since the award's first presen- tation in 1967, Bettis became the fourth Man of the Year recipient from Notre Dame, joining foot- ball and basketball All-American and 1949-81 Irish athletics director Edward "Moose" Krause (1976), running back Rocky Bleier (1985) and linebacker Nick Buoniconti (1990). Notre Dame matches Yale for the most recipients from any school. Prior to turning pro after his junior year at Notre Dame, Bettis accu- mulated 1,912 rushing yards while setting what remains a record with 20 total offensive touchdowns during the 1991 season. In the NFL, the first-round pick was selected to six Pro Bowls and fin- ished his 13-year career as the NFL's fifth all-time leading rusher with 13,662 yards and 91 touchdowns. In 2002, he was named the recipient of the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Among the Super Bowl champion's current activities are hosting a radio show and serving as an NFL analyst for ESPN. He also founded the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation, which creates a variety of programs and provides resources to assist under- privileged youth in making healthy choices. In addition, Bettis, who suffered from asthma as a child, focuses his efforts to encourage and educate children how to better manage their asthma and reduce its limitations. Bettis and his wife, Trameka, reside in Georgia and have two children. 2015 Notre Dame Football Packages Sept. 5 Texas Sept. 19 Georgia Tech Sept. 26 UMass Oct. 10 Navy Oct. 17 USC Nov. 14 Wake Forest A Notre Dame trip makes A GREAT GIFT: Birthday, Father's Day, Graduation, Christmas, Retirement All details at diamondtravel.com or call 602-870-9197 DIAMOND TRAVEL 27 years in business Happy 90th Birthday! #1 Irish Fan Hugo Della Flora Born November 16, 1924 Your devotion and loyalty to your family, friends, church and Notre Dame Football are unmatched.
