Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly … On Everett Golson's performance: "We just have to get a consistent per- formance. And that means a clean performance and taking care of the football. "Not all those mistakes were his, but the first one kind of set a bad tone to the game." On the Irish de- fense: "We played well enough defen- sively for us to win, but we shot ourselves in the foot offensively. … We couldn't come up with a big stop. This game was not set up for us to rely on our defense to come up with a big stop. This game was set up for our offense to win the game. "We put our de- fense in such a bad situation today and battled back. Great resolve. Great character. The kids are as good a group of kids that I've coached." On the feeling after a loss: "There aren't pats on the back for being great competitors. We're doing this to win. "We didn't win the game, and it's because of the obvious circumstances in the game — five turnovers." Notre Dame senior quarterback Everett Golson … On his miscues: "It's the competi- tor in me — just trying not to give up on the play. Today, it was just different calls, tipped balls, things like that. "We've got to clean it up." On the Irish come- back: "I never give up on a game at all. I al- ways have that mind- set that we're going to win and that I'm going to find a way to win. We're going to find a way to win somehow. "We've done a great job of being resilient despite turnovers. In the second half, we were very resilient on both sides of the ball. We just had a couple mistakes that kind of messed it up for us." Notre Dame junior defensive lineman Sheldon Day … On the Irish comeback: "It's a heartbreaker. We gave it our all, and we came up short." On Kelly's opinion that the loss wasn't due to the defense: "We defi- nitely came up short when we needed to come up big." On Kelly in the post-game locker FROM THE LOCKER ROOM Sophomore safety Max Redfield was credited with a team-high 10 tackles (nine solo), but the defense overall wasn't able to generate many big plays in the 55-31 loss to ASU.
