FAN FORUM Many times Coach Kelly actually followed Golson back to the bench or wherever Golson wanted to go — and still often Golson paid little attention to the coach. I believe this shows a lack of respect for Coach Kelly, the coaching staff and his teammates. Maybe it's time for change at the quarterback position. Jack L. Schneider Marquette, Mich. Mr. Schneider, Kelly was asked during the week of the USC game about Golson's sideline demeanor and had this to say: "If I'm on a player, they don't usually want to give me a big kiss. … So it wouldn't surprise me if a player, if I'm on them about something, they didn't immediately go and give me the big smile. "But we communicate fine, and there's emotion in the game, too. I am somebody that immediately reacts to something, and sometimes you just need about 10 or 15 seconds to let it process. "So we have no problem communicating the things that we need to communicate. Sometimes it takes just a deep breath. Not unusual from other quarterbacks that I've coached. I had a quarterback at Cincin- nati, Zach Collaros, very similar to Everett. You've just got to give them sometimes a minute to catch their breath. FROM THE WEBSITE Like many, one of our best posters on Blue- andGold.com, whose handle is HamonWry22, took Brian Kelly to task for blunders during the recent losing streak. He also was willing to pro- vide some benefit of doubt: HamonWry22: I am not ready to write Kelly off. He is not Charlie Weis, in spite of their shared love affair with a pass-oriented offense. I think he has a much greater affinity for the college game, and a better understanding of what it means to build a college program. I think his biggest shortcoming is that it has taken him too long to realize that "we're not in Kansas any- more, Toto." However, Nick Saban was not always Nick Sa- ban. At Michigan State, he was above average, but his record was not even as good as Mark Dantonio's, even before last year. It's often a learn-as-you-go process, and Kelly's a bright man, at least as bright as Les Miles, Jimbo Fisher, and, God help us, Gene Chizik, and they all have that highly coveted ring. It's a shame we have to wait until the sixth season to reach a conclusive evaluation, but in spite of my current misgivings, I still hold out at least a slim hope that Brian Kelly is not a finished product.
