knows and loves Michigan, and could step in without having the values of the
University and football program explained to him. He'll also be 62 years old in
the coming months, and has faced opposition in the past in his desire to return
to Ann Arbor.
Kyle Whittingham
Record: 84-43
Salary: N/A
Coaching stops: Utah head coach (2005-present); Utah
assistant coach (1994-2004); Idaho State assistant coach
(1988-93); College of Eastern Utah assistant coach (1987).
Background: Whittingham has been settled into Utah
for a good long while, the Utes enjoying three double-
digit-win seasons in his decade as head coach. He has
the Utes 8-4 this year and headed for the Vegas Bowl,
Utah's first postseason appearance in three years. His
best seasons at Utah were 2008-10, when his teams won
a combined 33 games in three years, beating Alabama in
the Sugar Bowl following the 2008 campaign.
Pros and cons: Whittingham is well organized and a solid coach whose teams
competed well in the Mountain West and showed they could rise up and knock
off some Goliaths (like Alabama) along the way. It's been tougher sledding in the
Pac-12 on limited resources, though, the Utes going 11-22 in the conference the
past three seasons.
