BY CHRIS BALAS U niversity of Detroit Jesuit High point guard and Michigan target Cassius Winston (6-0, Rivals.com's No. 34 junior nationally) put on a show in his season opener, scoring 32 points to lead U of D Jesuit to an 80-69 win over Chicago Morgan Park Dec. 8. The Detroit native scored on array of jumpers and acrobatic fin- ishes in the battle of Motown versus The Windy City. Morgan Park point guard Marcus LoVett, Rivals.com's No. 91 senior in the nation and a known YouTube sensation, was the other guard fans came to see, but Winston proved to be the headliner. "I had to represent for the city," Winston said. "It's Chicago versus Detroit, and I just had to go out there and put it on. I wasn't really worried about the other team, and I just like to play my game. How I play is the best way to go." Winston wasn't assigned to LoVett on defense — that duty fell on U of D Jesuit senior Gary Collins — but he did take it to LoVett a few times on offense. LoVett is more of the show- boat type who likes to play fast, while Winston is a true floor general who prefers to set the pace and make defenders play to it. LoVett came in with more of the hype, but Winston wasn't at all fazed. "Nothing much really went into preparing to play LoVett this week," Winston said. "I just had to play my game. That's what my coaches have always taught me — not to worry about another player. If I play my game, results will show." Winston opened the game with the first two points and finished it with the last two. One of his best attributes is getting others involved and mak- ing them better — he's a true point guard, and it showed again in the Cubs' win. "It sure is nice to have a Cassius Winston when the game gets a little crazy," U of D Jesuit coach Pat Don- nelly said. "He has impressed me ever since I met the kid, and every- thing that he does is almost effortless.   BASKETBALL RECRUITING Detroit Junior Point Guard Cassius Winston Off To Strong Start Winston, a 6-0, 165-pound point guard at University of Detroit Jesuit High, is rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 34 overall player in the class of 2016 by Rivals.com.
