INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP OLYMPIC SPORTS PERFORMERS Men's cross country redshirt junior Mason Ferlic: On Nov. 22, Ferlic finished 13th out of a field of more than 250 athletes at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Ferlic paced the Wolverines as he did in each race in which the varsity team competed this season. Ferlic also became Michigan's first back-to-back All-American since Nate Brannen accomplished the feat 10 years ago. Hockey sophomore goaltender Zach Nagelvoort: Nagelvoort was named Big Ten First Star of the Week Dec. 2. He recorded his best weekend of the season in net for the Wolverines, earning two victories in a sweep against Rensselaer. The sophomore goalie recorded 49 saves in the two-game stint against RPI. The award marks the fifth time he has received Big Ten weekly recognition. Women's freshman swimmer Clara Smiddy: At the AT&T Winter National Championships Dec. 3-6 in Greens- boro, N.C., Smiddy broke a school record that had stood since 1995. In the 200-yard backstroke, Smiddy clocked in at 1:52.24, coming in more than two seconds faster than Alecia Humphrey's 1:54.65 set in 1995. Smiddy placed fourth in the event and achieved an NCAA auto- matic-qualifying time. Women's freshman swimmer Emily Kopas: At the AT&T Winter National Championships Dec. 3-6 in Greens- boro, N.C., Kopas also broke a school record that had stood since 1995. Kopas set her record in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching at 2:09.70. She beat out Rachel Gustin as the fastest U-M swimmer in the event (2:10.37 in 1995). Volleyball sophomore Abby Cole: Cole was one of five unanimous selections to the 14-player All-Big Ten team. She played in all 30 matches for the Maize and Blue, averaging 3.67 kills a set and leading the Wolver- ines with 103 total blocks. Cole ranked fifth in the league in both kills per set and hitting percentage (.359) and fourth in points per set (4.26).
