academic restrictions and going after the right kids. I think he would be very successful." Josh McDaniels Record: 11-17 as Denver Broncos head coach (2009- 10) Salary: N/A Coaching stops: New England Patriots offensive coordi- nator (2011-present, 2006-08), quarterbacks coach (2004- 08), defensive asst. (2001-03); St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator (2011); Denver Broncos head coach (2009-10); Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach (2006); Michigan State graduate assistant (1999-2000). Background: McDaniels is an interesting candidate. He's from Barberton, Ohio (Bo Schembechler's hometown), played at Canton (Ohio) McKinley and has ties to the Midwest, but he's also been a professional coach most of his life. He's worked side by side with former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady for most of Brady's career. Pros and cons: McDaniels is young (38) and energetic, and he's a great offensive mind. He didn't work out in his only head-coaching job, but he seems ready to give it another try. The problem? He's never coached in college other than as a graduate assistant, so he'd have to have some help organizing recruiting, etc. But this one is intriguing, and there's interest. Bob Stoops Record: 168-42 at Oklahoma Salary: $5.25 million Coaching stops: Oklahoma head coach (1999-present); Florida defensive coordinator (1996-98); Kansas St. asst. (1989-95). Background: Stoops began his coaching career in the Big Ten at Iowa and has always been a Midwest guy at heart. He's won national championships at Florida (as a D.C.) and at Oklahoma, and he's considered one of the na- tion's top coaches. He's won 80 percent of his games, but some — like Yahoo.com's Dan Wetzel — believe a change of scenery might be in order, with OU fans taking him for granted. Pros and cons: Stoops would bring instant credibility, and he's got plenty of good coaching years left. He's got great ties in the Midwest, was 13-0 in only his second year at Oklahoma and won 39 straight at home in one stretch. Some believe he's not fully appreciated in Oklahoma and that he might be available.
