After fighting off a pesky Davidson squad, beating Miami in double overtime thanks to a clutch three-pointer by Anderson and taking care of North Carolina State, Virginia was 14-0 head- ing into a clash with 13th-ranked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish, behind leading scorer Jerian Grant, were shooting 55 percent from the field as a team — tops in the country. Notre Dame, though, shot only 35 percent against Virginia — and Grant was held to just six points, 11 below his season average. The end result was a 62-56 UVa win. "They played like a team that's won a champi- onship when they had to down the stretch," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said after the game. "I thought maybe when we started the second half, we would get some breathing room, but they're too good for that." Second-ranked Virginia was 19-0 headed into a much-hyped home game against fourth-ranked Duke Jan. 31. ESPN's "College GameDay" pre- game show came to Charlottesville for the first time ever. With less than three minutes to go, UVa led by five; a raucous, sold-out crowd at John Paul Jones Arena could sense victory No. 20. However, the Cavs suddenly went cold while Duke hit several clutch three-pointers. The Blue Devils closed the game on an 11-0 run en route to a 69-63 victory that put the first blemish on UVa's record. "We were up 11 and the next thing you know, they hit a few shots and the game's tied," Atkins said. "I'm like, 'Where the hell did the lead go?'
