get six wrestlers to the championship finals and all 10 members of the team finished no lower than fourth place. "We had all 10 guys contribute," Garland noted. "All 10 guys scored points, and that is so hard to do in our sport. Particularly in the ACC. One bout and you're out. You have one bad match and you're gone." It was the fifth ACC championship in program history and the second title in nine seasons for Garland. "I've never had a feeling so great as winning the ACC team title," redshirt fourth-year Nick Sulzer said. "Seeing the smile on Coach Garland's face and all the hard work he puts in that no one else in the country sees. "For him to win, and obviously for the team, it means the world to me." Virginia was driven by a murderer's row schedule and some disrespect in the seeding, including Sulzer. Only the second Virginia wres- tler to earn multiple All-America honors (three), Sulzer received a No. 2 seed heading in to the ACC Championships. "Being second seed kind of lit a little fire un- der me," Sulzer said. "Coach pulled me aside and talked to me a little about that, so that was all the motivation I needed." The team as a whole took a little "disrespected" mentality into the event. "I hope you guys realize what some of our op- ponents are saying about us and thinking about us and I hope you take that on that mat," Garland said. But Garland believes UVa's schedule prepared the team for the postseason, and they reaped the rewards. "We wrestled 10 to 11 nationally ranked teams and beat five of them, beat four conference cham- pions from around the country. Throw Iowa in the mix, the No. 1 team in America, in Iowa, the hard- est place on the planet to wrestle. "We kept telling these guys over and over, don't sweat the record. This is the strategy to get us ready for NCAAs and put us in the best possible scenario we've ever been in going into postseason." — Greg Waters "I am extremely proud of the way our women performed tonight. We knew it was going to take a lot to defeat teams who were performing at a high level like North Carolina. To have per- formances like we did in such a tight battle will only make us better in four weeks at the NCAA Championships." — Women's swimming and diving coach Audie Busch after the Cava- liers clinched their eighth straight ACC Cham- pionship Feb. 21 in Atlanta "In 60-plus years of the indoor program at Virginia, it is special for this group to be associated with the best finish at this meet. That speaks volumes about the character of this team. Every guy had to step up and it was a total team effort. We scored in dis- tance, in sprints, in relays, in throws and in jumps, and good teams are ones that score from everywhere. This performance will be a great springboard for even better things in the future." — Director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer after the men's team tied a school record with a third-place showing at the ACC Indoor Championships HOO'S TALKING PHOTO COURTESY UVA
