UNDER THE DOME 40 Years Ago: May 3, 1975 First‑year head coach Dan Devine's initial spring ends with a rainy Blue‑Gold Game. Rebuilding with the graduation of 13 starters, most notably quarterback Tom Clements, who directed the 1973 national title run, Notre Dame has its top two candidates there, Frank Allocco (severely separated shoulder during a scrim‑ mage) and Rick Slager (bruised ribs), sidelined. The staff turns to two freshmen who were Parade All‑Americans. Starting for the No. 1 Blue team is Gary Forystek, while Joe Montana gets the call for the Gold. The Blue takes a 10‑3 halftime lead while Forystek completes 8 of 20 passes. Montana misses on his first nine at‑ tempts before going 4 of 5. In the second half, Devine moves Montana in with the starters, and he proceeds to rifle a perfect 33‑yard TD aerial to converted QB Ted Burgmeier, a 58‑yard score to running back Mark McLane and a nine‑yard tally to tight end Ken MacAfee in the 38‑6 Blue victory. He guides a fourth TD march while finishing 7‑of‑12 pass‑ ing for 138 yards. Allocco and Slager remain the frontrunners, but a new candidate in Montana — who was seventh on the 1974 depth chart — emerges. 35 Years Ago: May 3, 1980 Cincinnati Moeller head coach Gerry Faust, who owns a 161‑17‑2 career record at the na‑ tion's top high school program, travels to Notre Dame to watch five of his former players in the Blue‑Gold Game: All‑American linebacker Bob Crable, wide receivers Tony Hunter and Dave Condeni, quarterback Tim Koegel and kicker Harry Oliver (a sixth, linebacker Rick Naylor, is enrolling in the fall). Prior to the game, Faust visits the Grotto and lights candles for his family and parents, and a Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: May Then-freshman Joe Montana's strong second half in the Blue-Gold Game (7-of-12 passing for 138 yards with three touchdowns) propelled him into the quar- terback competition in 1975.
