dus of talent and Notre Dame will be
able to field an experienced veteran
unit that can make a good run every
few years or so when the stars align.
Both men's and women's basketball
teams made us proud this year.
This brings me back to the football
team and why it is so frustrating and
disconcerting.
Under Father Jenkins, and unlike
the basketball team, it appears from
an outsiders' point of view that the
administration has actually tried to
enable the football team to excel. The
football team is allowed early enroll-
ees, an attempt has been made for a
more reasonable schedule than years
past, salaries for coaches have in-
creased, field turf has been installed,
the recruiting budget is the largest
in the country, and they have indoor
practice facilities, weight rooms and
meeting rooms which are state of the
art.
While the basketball team seems to
do more with less, football has done
less with more. In my opinion, there
hasn't been a more hospitable internal
atmosphere for the football program
to succeed in decades. Let's hope they
have the leadership that can capitalize
on it.
