The NHL MIKE KNUBLE REACHES 1,000-GAME MILESTONE Former Michigan standout Mike Knu- ble isn't having the kind of season he hoped after notching eight consecutive 20-goal seasons, but he's still grinding for the Washington Capitals. Knuble (three goals as of Dec. 19) was slated to play in his 1,000th NHL game Dec. 20 against Nashville. The former Detroit fourth-round pick (1991) enjoyed his best years after he turned 30. Of Knuble's 271 career goals, 221 came after he reached the mile- stone. "You spend five or six years trying to find your way, trying to lock a spot in the league, trying to prove to every- body you can play, that you're worthy of them giving you another contract and them investing time and energy into you," Knuble told the Washington Post. Knuble enjoyed his breakout season in 2002-03 playing on the Boston Bru- ins' top line alongside Joe Thornton and Glen Murray. He notched 30 goals and 59 points.
