He was set to become the 269th player in NHL history to reach the 1,000-game mark. "It's an honor to get 1,000 in this league; not a lot of guys do," Capitals head coach Dale Hunter said. "It's a credit to him. He kept being persistent, and he figured out how to play in the National Hockey League." "He's played 1,000 tough games," de- fenseman Karl Alzner added. "It hasn't been an easy road for him. No one gave him anything, but I can't think of a guy who's worked harder to get to this point." NHL NOTES • Former Michigan goalie and NHL veteran Marty Turco has signed a short- term deal with Austrian team EC Sal- zburg, Sportsnet.ca reported Dec. 19. Turco will play in the European Trophy Finals/Red Bulls Salute, a tournament played in Vienna and Salzberg from Dec. 16-18. The 36-year-old Turco went 11-11-3 in 29 games with Chicago last year, finish- ing with a .897 save percentage and 3.02 goals-against average. Turco re- portedly talked to the Toronto Maple Leafs in November, but hasn't been able to find a job with an NHL club this sea- son. It is unclear how many games he'll play with EC Salzburg.
