Barth, a player at Lake Erie College and self-described Beilein disciple, followed the Michi- gan head coach's advice in how to play his seven-footer. "Offensively, he's going to de- velop," Barth said. "Right now, he's not big and strong, more of an IQ guy, but he can shoot it. Coach Beilein wanted to see more of him rolling to the basket real hard. "He does a great job catching it on the move, keeping it up and finishing rather than just posting up and going to work from there. He does great with jump hooks, and I think that's how Coach Beilein plans to groom him in his younger years at Michigan, so why not start now?" It paid off, and it didn't take much convincing. Barth has his sights set on coaching in the future, and he's been following Beilein since 2005, when hometown hero Mike Gansey played for Beilein at West Virginia. Barth would work out with Gansey when the guard would come home, and Beilein's offense became a point of fascination. "He has such a unique style. I love it," Barth said. "Jon is perfect for him. I think he is the definition of Coach Beilein's system, what he wants to do, and what he's going to do — how he's going to develop in his years there, up to his junior and senior year. "I think the correct description Coach Beilein gave to me is he is a big man that can shoot, not a shooter who is a big man. That works out well.
