cavalier profile BRIAN "COBI" SPAN Second-Year • Soccer Forward and midfielder Brian "Cobi" Span is coming off an ACC All-Freshman season in which he started 18 of Virginia's 20 matches and finished third on the team in scoring. Almost through his second season at Virginia, Span said he feels more com- fortable with the collegiate game and his role as a second-year. "After coming off my first year, I did play a lot but didn't make the impact I wanted to have with the team," Span said. "As a freshman, I was still getting used to the college game, where it's a lot more physical and faster. Coming into this year, after the spring and summer, I got a lot stronger and was able to help my teammates more and take on more of a leadership role." On a team riddled with injuries to its starters, Span was one of just two 28 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER Cavaliers that started each of the first 18 games this year. The second-year was the Wahoos' second-leading scorer with 15 points and led the team with five assists. Span said there are improvements in certain aspects of his game that are helping him contribute more to UVa's success. "My feeding skills and passing ability have improved," the Somers, N.Y., native stated. "Playing in the middle of the field, I think I'm using those attributes well to help the team." Entering the ACC and NCAA tournaments, Span said his goal now is just to find ways to help his club win. "We're at a point where every game is completely vital for us, and if we can win out we have a good chance of winning the ACC and that helps as we move into the NCAA Tournament with rankings and RPI. I just want to continue playing well and helping the team by getting assists, goals, anyway I can, and with the three starters injured, every player needs to step up individually to help us win." — Greg Waters ◆ Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVa
