cavalier profile GLORIA DOUGLAS Second-Year • Soccer Second-year Gloria Douglas had such a stellar rookie season, it may be surprising that she ad- mits to an ongoing adjustment to the pace of the college game. Nevertheless, her play has already made her an integral part of this season's UVa women's soccer team. Last year's ACC All-Freshmen selection had posted six goals and six assists for 18 points, third- most on the team, heading into the NCAA Tour- nament. However, getting Douglas to take any individual credit is nearly impossible, which speaks to her selflessness. "As a team, I think we are doing really well, taking it one game at a time. The main thing is that we want to stay focused on the game as a whole and take it one game at a time, and not get caught up in the future. We want to play our game and try to execute as much as we can." And execute they did against North Carolina in September for the program's first-ever victory over the Tar Heels, 1-0 in double overtime. "Obviously, it was a big win," Douglas said. "We were prepared for it. After a big win like that, the camaraderie was so great because the team played really well … we realized that we could play any team and be a threat." As much of a team player as there is, Douglas, after endless prodding, did share some insight into her approach, a simple commitment to her team through non-stop effort. "I always want to work hard because I know my teammates are going to work hard for me," Doug- las said. "I just try to get in a good position to take the shot or make a pass to get my teammates a better shot on goal." — Sean Corso ◆ Photo by Matt Riley/ courtesy UVa DECEMBER 2011 ◆ 29
