1971 Road Trip Was The Beginning Of Four Decades Of Support By Robert L. Bousman (Comm '67) As do a lot of ideas, they often start in a place like the Bull and Bear on 15th Street in N.W. Washington, D.C. The assembled were a mix of UVa Club of Washington members — Ted Britton, H. J. Barrett, Howard Ligon and others I can't recall. The conversa- tion gravitated to the University of Maryland, Lefty Drisell and the "UCLA of East," as Lefty called the Tom McMillen-Len Elmore lead Terps. Someone suggested checking the upcoming schedule. A pay phone call to Charlottesville confirmed December 8 as the home date. After much back and forth, someone recalled a recent private train trip to play Georgia Tech in football set up with the coopera- tion of the Southern Railroad. This led to a vote to call the Virginia Student Aid Foundation and inquire as to the possibility of setting up something similar on a much smaller scale. I was voted to lead this effort while in the men's room. Some things don't change. TED DAVENPORT What a guy. He gave me the name of Bill McLean, a senior person in Southern Railroad management, who had organized the Georgia Tech trip. When Bill discovered what we had in mind he nearly exploded through the phone with enthusiasm. Bill gave us Frank C. McCue III, M.D. Peggy and Copley McLean Mr. C. Subsequently, I received a call from a Mr. Darylrumple who coordinated such events for the Southern Railroad. The number of potential riders grew to near 50 forcing us to use the largest of three size club cars available. As it turned out, this was a privately leased car with signs on the side reading, "Private Party, UVa Only." LITTLE ACORNS When I gave Ted the rough final tally, he suggested this might be an excellent opportunity to attempt to interest some of the cap- tive assembled into joining the VSAF. I was sent a small box of hastily designed $25 pledge cards, with a place to sign up on the back. I decided the best time to introduce these cards would be on Continued next page Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rader Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Railey, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon F. Rainey, Jr. Mr. Malcolm M.
