the way down (before the game outcome, but after Culpeper), to give the group a chance to unwind and get acquainted with the ameni- ties, etc. Forty years later, a true testimony to the effects of this modest effort can be seen at most home football games, sitting in the first four or five rows of the upper deck, between the 35-yard lines, just above the President's Box on the east side. THE LOGISTICS The logistics got interesting as the south bound train started at Union Station in Wash- ington, D.C. stopping at Alexandria, Manassas, Warrenton, Culpeper and Orange (yes, one guy got on in Orange named, John Faulconer). Hoos boarded at every stop. A problem arose as Mr. Darylrumple pointed out that the northbound train after the game, did not stop in Orange– question was, what to do with Mr. Faulconer. Enter Bill McLean–the railroad arranged to have the northbound train slow to a crawl pass- ing through downtown Orange at about 11:30 p.m. enough to allow our passenger an opportu- nity to "detrain" (railroad lingo). The railroad decided to uncouple the club car in Charlottesville and leave it on a siding with a railroad security person on board until the subsequent hook-up to go north. Davenport materialized approximately 46 box dinners and a large team bus to meet us at the train station and put us in a block section at University Hall. THE GAME Bill "Hoot" Gibson's Cavs, lead by co- captains Scott McCandlish and Frank DeWitt with the introduction of guard/forward Barry Parkhill, tore up the Terps 78-57. The fast pace offense set up by Coach Gibson left McMillen, Elmore and company somewhere between the foul lines and mid-court for a good portion of the game. The team went on to finish 21-7. 8-4 in the ACC. THE RIDE HOME The bus driver was the best. We had run out of refreshments, so we made a detour to a place to fix the problem and re-boarded our private club car. The condition of the assembled could only be described as euphoric. The party swung into high gear. END OF THE LINE Each stop along the way home was entertain- ing, as the good byes were exchanged by those detraining and the on-board survivors. At 1 a.m. plus, we arrived at Union Station, Washington, D.C. Organizing the residual participants was a nightmare–thank goodness for taxi cabs. What a day! H. J. Barrett and I were asked to join the VSAF board the following year. t 6 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER E vent Recaps All-Sports Reunion More than 400 Virginia student-ath- lete alumni returned to Charlottesville for the Sixth Annual All-Sports Reunion during Homecomings on Oct. 14-16, 2011.
