PREP PROFILES Michigan's coaching staff has scoured the nation, going coast-to- coast in search of the best players. One area of major focus is California, where the coaches have plenty of ties, including Jim Harbaugh's head c o a c h i n g s t i n t with the San Fran- cisco 49ers. It's not a sur- prise then to see an offer go to one o f t h e G o l d e n State's top defen- sive ends. Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan four-star Bryson Young has kept in touch with the Michigan coaching staff after a February tender. "I've built a bit of a bond with the Michigan coaches — they're great," he said. "I've gotten to know them, and they're really cool and good coaches." The 6-5, 220-pounder has plenty of other options, including Colorado State, Fresno State, Oregon State and UCLA. His abilities on the field, where he contributed as both a de- fensive lineman and tight end for his high school team, have earned him a ranking as the No. 19 weakside de- fensive end nationally and the No. 43 overall rising-senior in California. Young had another chance to im- press the Michigan coaches when he participated in the Wolverines' satel- lite camp in Fresno, Calif., just down the street from his hometown of Clo- vis. Being able to work out with de- fensive line coach Greg Mattison was a great chance to figure out if he could see himself donning the winged hel- met at the next level. "We learned a lot. It was great to be out and just prove myself," Young said of the camp. "I am way better now than I was before the camp started. I think I did a pretty good job. I definitely think I got better and took steps in the right direction to get better." The recruiting process still has plenty of time to go for Young. Though he knows what he's looking for in each school, he plans to make sure he does his due diligence with official visits to make sure they can meet all his criteria. "I want to get into psychology, so I want to see how that department is, obviously," he said. "Then I'd like to get to know the coaching staff. The coaching staff has to be father-types, where you can trust them. That's im- portant to me. "I'm going to take my time. It'll probably be sometime during or to- ward the end of my season." The Wolverines — and Young — will have to see if there's room in the class by the time he plans to pull the trigger. — Tim Sullivan California DE On The U-M Radar ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ Buchanan High School Clovis, Calif.
