Freshmen in 1975, they started the pipeline from Cass Tech High School in Detroit to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Technicians' alumnus tailback Roosevelt Smith joined them at U-M a year later. The oil then dried up for a little more than three decades — with tailback Clarence Williams an outlier in 1995 — but over the past seven years, starting with the arrival of cornerback Boubacar Cissoko in 2008, Cass Tech has produced 10 future Wolverines, more than any other high school program in the state of Michigan during that period. The Cass-Michigan connection is obvious — current Technicians' coach Thomas Wilcher is a former U-M tailback from 1983-86 — but players like Cissoko, defensive lineman Will Campbell, cornerback Teric Jones and safety Thomas Gordon, who all arrived as freshmen in 2009, created a culture where many of the best players from Cass went to Michigan. "There is a really tight bond at Cass because guys are coming from tough situations," said U-M senior outside linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone. "You become brothers, and I think a lot of guys want to play together in college. That's why you see two or three guys from the same class end up at Michigan." Jenkins-Stone is one of five current Wolverines that played at Cass Tech, joining redshirt junior cornerback Terry Richardson, junior safety Delano Hill, junior cornerback Jourdan Lewis and redshirt sophomore offensive guard David Dawson.
