INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Getting To Know Freshman Swimmer Paul Powers As a rookie, Paul Powers was a three-time NCAA All-American (50-yard free- style, 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-freestyle relay) and was also a four-time Big Ten champion in the same events, plus the 200-yard medley relay. Get to know the nine-time Georgia state champion from Gainesville. Nickname: "I have a lot of nick- names. I would say the two most common ones are PP and Sunshine, like the guy from 'Remember the Ti- tans.'" Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "TK WU, by far." Best meal he can cook by himself: "If I have the right stuff, a Pittsburgh- style filet, with a side of steamed broccoli and a sweet potato. That's the perfect meal right there." Sports he plays besides swim- ming: "Football in high school. I played defensive end." Hobbies: "I would say my two fa- vorite things are hiking and I am a very avid car enthusiast. I love restor- ing cars and stuff like that." Favorite TV show: "I love 'Game of Thrones.'" Favorite movie: "It may sound weird, but 'Tarzan.' That's always been my favorite." Dream vacation: "New Zealand." Favorite professional swimming venue he's been to: "Two summers ago I got to go to the 2008 Olympic pool in Beijing. That was really cool because of the tradition and the people that had swam there. It's cool to say that I swam in that pool." Favorite professional athlete: "I'm going to have to say Cullen Jones. Mainly because last summer I trained at SwimMAC with him, and he's just a funny guy and he was great to hang out with. He's been in the Olympics, but you don't ever feel like he's a famous athlete. There's just a great vibe around him." Role model: "My dad, Randall." Powers won the Big Ten title in the 50-yard freestyle and also helped the Wolverines claim gold in three relay races during his debut campaign. PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS
