MICHIGAN IN THE PROS ported July 10 that Pacioretty is ex- pected to need 12 weeks to recover, meaning he'd miss a large portion of training camp. Montreal's first regu- lar-season game is Oct. 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pacioretty's injury will not require surgery. The 26-year-old led the Ca- nadiens with 37 goals and a career- high 67 points last season and fin- ished with five goals and two assists in 11 playoff games. It was his second straight season with at least 35 goals. NHL NOTES • The Anaheim Ducks acquired the rights to former Michigan standout Carl Hagelin on NHL Draft day, June 27. The New York Rangers sent the forward and the No. 59 and No. 179 picks in the 2015 draft to the Ducks for forward Emerson Etem and the 41st pick. Hagelin, 26, is a restricted free agent and continues to negotiate a contract with Anaheim. He totaled 17 goals and 18 assists, and was plus-18 for New York in 2014-15. • Former U-M defenseman Matt Hun- wick signed a two-year free agent deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs worth $2.4 million. The 30-year-old spent last season with the New York Rangers, scoring two goals and adding nine as- sists in 55 games, and has registered 18 goals and 60 assists in 347 games with Boston, Colorado and New York. MLB CLAYTON RICHARD IS BACK IN THE MAJORS Former Michigan pitcher Clayton Richard, back in the Major Leagues after two shoulder surgeries, picked up a July 4 win for the Chicago Cubs in his first big league start since June 2013. He allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 7-2 victory over the Mi- ami Marlins. The Cubs had acquired him from the Pirates, and had until June 30 to add him to their 25-man roster. Richard, 31, told MLB.com he wasn't sure if he'd ever get back. "I questioned it at times, coming back, because before I threw, I didn't know how I would react," Richard said. "The first time I played catch [after the surgery], it was worrisome. "As I got going, it started to loosen up. … Initially and before that, there were those worries, but once I started throwing, they subsided." Richard received an ovation from the Wrigley Field faithful when he left in the seventh inning, having pitched six-plus innings and earning the win. "It was awesome," Richard said. "It's probably the first time I've had something like that. I really enjoyed it." Richard gave up six earned runs in his next outing and stood 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA in 9 1/3 innings pitched as of July 19. Chicago White Sox pitcher Zach Putnam, U-M's only other Major League representative, also earned a win July 4, pitching one third of an inning of relief in the White Sox' 3-2 win over Baltimore. He stood 3-3 with a 3.60 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched as of July 19. ❏
