FOOTBALL RECRUITING for him. He is going to take official visits, so even if he picks Michigan in August, it might not be totally over." Upshur, a 6-3, 238-pounder, is the No. 4 tight end and No. 63 overall player in the nation, and would be a huge get for Jim Harbaugh in a tight end-heavy offense. A shorter, stouter H-back style of player (best known for his outstand- ing pass-catching abilities, but also very sound in the blocking game), he would be an excel- lent complement to the long, lean, classic tight end in current pledge Sean McKeon. Heading a little farther east in New Jersey down the Atlantic City Ex- pressway, Egg Har- bor City's Cedar Creek High School is home to another top target in four- star receiver Ahmir Mitchell. The 6-3, 203-pounder is the No. 8 wideout and No. 51 overall pros- pect nationally, and has been very open that Michigan leads his list (followed by Ohio State and Notre Dame). He has visited U-M multiple times since Harbaugh's staff has been in town, and could be as solid a bet as any to end up joining the class down the road. "I think Ahmir is a Michigan lean at this point," Friedman opined. "He's giving Ohio State their last shot at Fri- day Night Lights [OSU's elite camp]. "He will be at Michigan for the Bar- becue Aug. 8. It's in the works that his mother also makes the trip for that. He could even commit at the Barbecue at the Big House. I think he's trying to figure out where he does stand with a couple schools, then he'll be ready to wrap things up." M i c h i g a n h a s turned the New Jer- sey/Philadelphia area into a pipeline of sorts already, w i t h H a w k i n s and Johnson (and potentially more) joining 2015 sign- ees Grant New- some (The Law- rence School, N.J.) and Jon Runyan Jr. (Philadelphia St. Jo- seph's Prep). If U-M were to close on Paramus (N.J.) Catholic de- fensive tackle Rashan Gary, it would be the most impressive recruiting job in the area in the past couple years — in fact since another Paramus Catholic Paladin became a Wolverine, in the form of five-star 2014 cornerback Ja- brill Peppers. Gary is a 6-4, 290-pound five-star, who is rated the No. 2 defensive tackle and No. 6 overall player nationally. He New Jersey native Ahmir Mitchell, the nation's No. 51 overall prospect, has Michigan at the top of his list and will return to Ann Arbor for the Barbecue at the Big House.
