A keeper is a different breed — a person who's willing to put himself in harm's way." Given the various responsibili- ties of a keeper, it's mandatory that he have the proper mindset. That's the case with Caldwell. "A good tactical mind is also necessary," Gelnovatch said. "A goalkeeper isn't active with the ball on every play, but he sees the whole field. He must organize his team, whether it's defensive re-starts or corner kicks, defend our half of the field and have a tactical idea of or- ganizing not only the guys in the back but also the whole team. "Jeff's a smart kid. He has con- fidence in himself on the field and in the classroom, and has a good presence. "When we go over game tactics, he's not worried about his keep- ing the ball out of the goal, but — more importantly — how to stop danger before it happens." Caldwell was only available to play in two games for Virginia last season — he was selected for the U.S. Under-20 National Team in the FIFA World Cup — and saw zero minutes of on-field time for the Cavaliers. However, that wasn't a major concern for Caldwell because he still was able to face live competition.
