FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP Recruiting Notes • Notre Dame isn't wasting much time trying to lock up its next quarterback. Just three months after Brownsburg (Ind.) High five-star quarter- back Hunter Johnson — its top target in 2017 — committed to Tennessee, the staff welcomed Cedar Hill (Texas) High three-star quarterback Avery Davis to campus for an unofficial visit. Davis, who also holds offers from Texas Tech, Colorado and Kansas State, drove 15 hours — both ways — to see Notre Dame host Wake For- est Nov. 14. "Of the schools that have offered me, I can tell you that they're No. 1 right now," Davis said after the visit. "The school was beautiful and so were the athletic facilities. … It was kind of surreal be- ing there." While the 5-11, 188-pound Davis is ranked by Rivals as just a three-star prospect and the No. 53 recruit in Texas for the next recruiting cycle, there's a reason that he has flown under the radar, and that's because he spent last sea- son playing behind LSU signee Justin McMillan at Cedar Hill. Davis strung together an impressive junior sea- son throwing for 1,966 yards and 22 touchdowns, and that's why Notre Dame is pushing to land a commitment before other major programs get involved. • The Irish also hosted one of their top defensive targets in the class of 2017 for the Wake Forest game in Saint Joseph (Mich.) High four-star defensive end Corey Malone-Hatcher. Malone-Hatcher, who was on campus for the Irish Invasion in June, arrived as a prospect that was considered somewhat of a Michigan lean, but after watching the Irish handle the Demon Deacons he explained that isn't exactly the case. "I love so many schools," Malone-Hatcher said when asked where things stand with his recruitment. "Michigan, Notre Dame. I like UCLA a lot; obviously they have had a lot of success at my position the last four years. "Getting that offer from Notre Dame recently was big. I plan on getting down to the Florida schools. … I have so much time left, I don't want to rush the process." The 6-3, 246-pound Malone-Hatcher is ranked by Rivals as the No. 6 recruit in Michigan, and the No. 9 strongside defensive end and No. 223 overall prospect in the country. — Andrew Ivins Follow @@BGI_AndrewIvins on Twitter for daily recruiting updates available on BlueandGold.com!
